GABA Oolong is grown exclusively in Taiwan using a unique fermentation process. While all tea contains some gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), Japanese scientists discovered that fermenting tea in a nitrogen-rich environment significantly enhances GABA levels. In the body, GABA acts as a neurotransmitter and offers extensive health benefits, notably reducing anxiety, stress, depression, and other nervous system disorders. It is also known to promote alertness and enhance sleep quality.

When steeped, the tightly rolled leaves uncurl and can be re-infused many times for ongoing enjoyment.

Test results of the Art of Tea high mountain oolong GABA tea from this region is fairly consistently at about 200mg/100ml (see GABA content test result_2022)

The natural GABA tea making process involves a unique procedure where the leaves are “oxidised” in an anaerobic (oxygen-free) condition, using nitrogen instead of oxygen. This process causes the natural glutamic acid in the tea leaves to convert to GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid).

Whilst all teas from the Camellia sinensis contain some natural GABA, the amount of GABA in regular green, black and oolongs teas is considered to be minimal.

OUR STORY

From market stall to leading tea retailer

The Art of Tea began in 2000 with twelve varieties, sold from a stall at Hobart's Salamanca Market every Saturday.

Twenty-five years on, we still blend by hand in small batches — right here in Tasmania, now with over 150 teas and herbal blends to explore.
