Loose leaf green tea uses whole or gently rolled leaves that retain far more of their natural flavour, colour and beneficial compounds. Most green tea bags contain smaller, broken leaves that brew quickly but can taste flat or bitter in comparison. With loose leaf green tea, you get a fresher, more nuanced cup, and much more control over the result.
Green tea brews best with water that's 80°C. Use approximately one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per 250ml cup and steep for 2-3 minutes depending on how strong you like it. A shorter steep gives a lighter, brighter cup; longer gives a bolder, more robust flavour. Recommended without milk.
Bitterness in green tea is almost always caused by water that's too hot or steeping for too long. Try dropping your water temperature and reducing your steep time to 2 minutes. Small adjustments make a big difference — once you find your sweet spot, green tea is wonderfully smooth and fresh.
Yes, green tea contains caffeine, though generally less than black tea and significantly less than coffee. It also contains L-theanine, which works alongside caffeine to create a calm, focused energy — many people find it gives a gentle lift without the jitteriness sometimes associated with coffee. It's a popular choice for a mindful morning or a mid-afternoon reset. If you'd prefer not to have caffeine you can browse our Caffeine Free Tea range here.
Green tea is one of the most widely researched teas when it comes to health. It's rich in antioxidants - particularly a catechin called EGCG - which is associated with supporting metabolism, brain function, heart health and reducing inflammation. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine also makes it a popular choice for gentle, sustained focus. While tea isn't a medicine, it's a genuinely nourishing addition to a daily wellness routine.
Green tea is traditionally enjoyed without milk - the delicate flavour doesn't pair as naturally with dairy as black tea does. That said, there are no rules here. A small drizzle of honey can complement certain green teas beautifully, particularly floral or grassy varieties. It's worth trying it plain first to appreciate the flavour, then experimenting from there.
All loose leaf tea has a 2 year best before date. We suggest storing your tea in an air proof container in a dry cupboard or pantry, away from direct sunlight and moisture. You can view our recommended Loose Leaf Tea Caddies here.
Yes, some blends offer a small taster size which contains approx 4 serves so you can try the tea before committing to a larger size. If you find you love the blend, our sizes get cheaper in bulk.
